Nike Store Spatial Guidelines

Spatial layout design - Design research

For Nike store concepts, part of the Nike Brand Creative Retail fleet, new guidelines were initiated to make the store spatially look more in sync with the consumer and with merchandising strategies.

For the Nike Live and the Nike Rise Small Format, the ask was for more consistent and spatially relevant interior and layout designs. The current guidelines had to be re-evaluated. First, it was done to align the layout designs and journeys of many stores that are opening. Secondly, it was done to investigate fitting a larger store concept into smaller units. By looking at already opened doors, having sessions with designers and site visits with the merchandising teams, new guidelines were made in 3d and translated into 2d.

The other reasoning behind this research was because agencies are getting involved into taking over the majority and straightforward store designs. The feedback from the teams was used to set-up guidelines on what fixtures we can use for what areas. Simultaneously, the Nike Global teams were doing the same thing for a big concept update. Both guidelines were used to set up a library of spatial grouping of fixtures, and zoning a store was interpreted differently by using high density and low density product areas. All of this resulted in more consistency in spatially designing a store, and the guidelines were used to brief agencies who are doing the majority of design works for us.

This project gives me the experience of using my knowledge on layout designing and to further develop the concepts and to align with different teams.
