The Mood Adaptive Dress

Experience Design - Consumer Research - Styling & Art Direction

An environmentally and socially responsible garment that involves wearable advanced technology. That technology evolves with the mood and emotions of the owner.

The Mood Adaptive Dress is a piece of technology-integrated clothing that can change physically according to the mood of the owner. Its aesthetics can change from a calm to a happy and exciting state, representing the more modest emotions versus the more outspoken ones. The owner is in control and can change its state to her emotions, which matches the context and scenario she is in.

The project behind the mood adaptive dress came from the urge to design against the current fast fashion industry, which produces a staggering amount of clothing. It is fuelling the consumers’ need to buy more and more while the majority of produce ends up in waste. It is one of the most polluting industries in the world.

Part of the project was a lot of validating design decisions This was because of the highly subjective human emotions that needed to be translated into tangible aesthetics. Therefore, many mood boards were created and used for aesthetic tests with volunteers and focus groups. Prototypes were made based on these collective decisions, to validate physical shapes and experiences. Setting up new processes, making a lot of drawings, reading research papers and user testing were all part of making sure the subjective experience of the final design was industrially validated.

Finally, with the finished design, styling exercises and spatial experiences were used to capture the design and concept with moving and still images. The design and its concept are presented by telling the story behind the concept in an abstract way. Its totality was meant to be shown at (fashion) expositions and was eventually featured at the Dutch Design Week 2021 and Pakhuis de Zwijger.

This project gives me the experience of being responsible for my project, from the start till the end. Besides thinking about the concept, it was also important to think realistically to make the design executable. Finally, the product presentation gave me a lot of project management experience.
